Former Director of the USTP Cliff White Will Advise NABT on Legislative and Policy Matters

Originally released by the National Association of Bankruptcy Trustees

The National Association of Bankruptcy Trustees (NABT) is pleased to announce that Clifford J. White III has been appointed as Senior Advisor to its Legislative Committee and will advise the organization on legislative and public policy matters. Mr. White headed the United States Department of Justice's bankruptcy watchdog, the U.S. Trustee Program (USTP), for 17 years until his retirement last year.

NABT President Marc Albert welcomed Mr. White in his new role by saying that "Cliff White was a well-respected leader of the U.S. Trustees. Those of us in the chapter 7 and subchapter V trustee ranks always appreciated his reasonableness and commitment to the fair administration of the bankruptcy system under Presidential Administrations of both political parties."

"Cliff remains enormously respected on Capitol Hill," said Jason Gold, co-chair of NABT's Legislative Committee. "As NABT continues to move forward in supporting legislation to improve and modernize the nation's bankruptcy system, we are delighted to work with Cliff to achieve these goals."

In accepting his new position, Mr. White said that "this new role allows me to continue my long-standing work to improve the bankruptcy system, including by helping ensure that the case trustees are recognized for their indispensable role in making the system work."

The USTP is a component of the Justice Department with responsibility for appointing case trustees and overseeing both consumer and business bankruptcy cases. Under Mr. White's leadership, the USTP implemented several major changes to the Bankruptcy Code, including the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005 and the Small Business Reorganization Act in 2020. He also spearheaded enforcement efforts against debtors, creditors, and professionals who violated bankruptcy law in both consumer and business reorganization cases. Mr. White supported legislative efforts to provide additional compensation for chapter 7 trustees.

Mr. White will become Senior Advisor, as a volunteer, and he will remain as a Bankruptcy Compliance Executive with AIS Infosource, a professional services and technology company.
